Mary Elizabeth Ilg has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota and has served as Executive Assistant to the Leadership Team of St. Paul's Monastery since 2017.  In 2021, Mary became an Oblate of St. Paul's Monastery and also joined the Benedictine Center staff:   It is an honor to begin a new position as Co-Director/ Office Manager of the Benedictine Center as we re-open our doors to the sacred threshold of the Monastery, after a long hiatus. I am grateful to work in such a peaceful setting, where faith and daily life intersect. The beautiful silence of contemplative prayer surrounds us here, and we are excited to share this space with you again. I have been privileged to attend many retreats at the Benedictine Center, and we hope that the past programs we enjoyed will return in the near future. I have especially benefited from learning the practice of Centering Prayer during a retreat in 2019. This is one of many ways that guests can deepen their relationship with God and enrich their spiritual lives profoundly. I pray that all who enter here to find a respite from the noise and chaos of the world will come to know the peace which passes all understanding. I look forward to serving the Sisters of Saint Paul’s Monastery as they continue their outreach of bringing Benedictine spirituality to the Twin Cities, and with the charism of hospitality, welcoming all guests as Christ.

Gwen Pickering

The Benedictine sisters were part of my early faith formation.  To my surprise, they have been a huge part of my ongoing formation as an adult. So, being able to be part of the Benedictine Center feels like home to me. My life took a radical change in 2004. My only child left to go to college in August and my dad died in September. I felt totally lost. The only thing I knew for sure was that even though I attended church regularly and had a strong faith life, I was being called to come away, be silent, and grow closer to God. Given the fact that I am extremely extraverted, it seemed odd. But the call to silence was clear and persistent. I accepted the call and went on a week-long silent retreat.  It was amazing! The next month, I went on a 30-day silent retreat.  In the 12 years since those experiences, I have continued to spend time alone with God every month at various retreat centers. During those retreats, I learned many new ways of praying: listening to God in scripture, dialoguing with Jesus, and praying in ways that have no words at all. I also…
